Ted Critchley
Varsity head coach

Ted Critchley starts his third season as the
varsity boys basketball coach at Blaine High School. He has been a varsity boys basketball coach for the past 15 years.
He has coached at every division in the state of Minnesota from Class A to Class AAAA.
Before coming to Blaine, Critchley
spent 5 years in Waseca, Minnesota. Critchley's teams in Waseca finished in the top 2 of the conference every
year except the 2003 basketball season. The team won conference championships in 2002 and 2005. The 2002 Waseca
basketball team also finished 4th in the Class AAA State Tournament.
Coach Critchley is an active member in the
Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association where he serves as the Chairman for Academic All-State Selection Committee.
This committee awards quality basketball players for their academic performance as well as their athletic achievements on
the basketball court.
Coach Critchley looks forward to the challenge of building a high caliber basketball
program at Blaine High School. He enjoys the summer months where he is able to work with basketball players to help
them improve their individual skills. He also attends several clinics each and every year to improve his craft.
Coach Critchley lives in Blaine with his wife, Nikki, along with their two boys, Kobe and Carson.
Tom Critchley
Varsity assistant coach
Coach Critchley returned to the active coaching ranks in the
'06-'07 season by joining the staff of his son Ted at Blaine High School. The 2008-09 school year marks his
37th year of involvement with basketball at the high school and/or college levels. During his 27 year coaching career,
he served as the head coach at Waterville-Elysian, Hawley, and Roseville Area schools with his teams compiling a winning percentage
of 63% of their games. His 1987 Hawley and 1997 Roseville squads won Region championships earning each a berth in the
State Tournament. Coach Critchley is currently in his tenth year serving as Executive
Director of the Minnesota Basketball Coaches Association. He was selected for induction into the Minnesota Basketball
Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2000. Critchley is currently the Associate Principal at Roseville Area Middle School.
He received a B.S. degree in education and a Master's degree in educational administration from Moorhead State University
and he completed the principal licensure program at St. Mary's University. Tom and his wife, Sally, a kindergarten
teacher at Andover Elementary, have five children and ten grandchildren.
Nick Novak
Junior varsity coach
Coach Novak has been at Blaine High School since the 2005 basketball season. Nick is
currently enrolled at Hamline University majoring in social studies and elementary education and has completed a minor in
coaching.
Prior to pursuing his coaching career at Blaine, Nick was a member of the 2004 Hamline University
Varsity basketball team. Nick attended Ladysmith High School in Wisconsin where he was a member of the 2003 Division
3 State Championship basketball team and the 2004 Regional Championship golf team.
Mike Engelhaupt
Sophomore coach
Coach Engelhaupt joined the Blaine coaching staff for the 2006 season.
Previously, he spent three years as the head coach of the Columbia Heights varsity girls team and three years as an
assistant coach for the DeLaSalle High School girls team.
Mike played high school basketball at Duluth East and was named
Most Inspirational player as a senior. During college, Coach Engelhaupt was a practice player for the University of
Minnesota women's basketball team and he currently is a practice player for the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA. Mike is
a math teacher at Blaine High School.
Steve Drewlo
Freshman A coach
Coach Drewlo starts his second season with the Bengal
basketball staff. He has been teaching at Blaine since 1994 in the social studies department and is also the running
backs coach for the varsity football team. Steve also has experience coaching track and field athletes as well as baseball. Steve is married to Lisa and has two children, Tyler
and Alexis. He considers himself lucky and proud to be a teacher and coach at Blaine High School.
Thad Weber
Freshman B coach
Thad Weber joined the Blaine staff for the 2006 season.
Thad played at St. Anthony Village High School in northeast Minneapolis where he scored nearly 1700 points in his
career. He was named to the All-Metro team in 2002. His favorite all-time player is former Indiana Pacer Reggie
Miller. He currently is a student at Anoka-Ramsey Community College.
Chris Hergenrader
Assistant coach
Chris Hergenrader joined the staff for the 2006 season.
His basketball background involves playing at Homer High School in Homer, Nebraska from 1985-1988. Chris was
on the football team at Iowa State University from 1988-1990. He currently is in the Masters of Arts in Teaching program
at Hamline University and is a science teacher at St. Anthony Village High School. Chris and his wife Jill have four
children.
